RBI Bonds comprise of Floating Rate Savings Bonds (FRSB), 2020 (Taxable).
These bonds are linked to National Savings Certificate (NSC) with variable interest rate as: NSC interest rate + 0.35%.
Latest issued FRSB is 8.05% RBI bond, in which Interest rate is set at 8.05% till December 2023.
Previously issued RBI bonds - 8% Savings (Taxable) Bonds, 2003 [also called 8% RBI Bonds] and 7.75% RBI Savings (Taxable) Bonds [also called 7.75% RBI Bonds], have been discontinued in 2018 and 2020 respectively.
Bond trading is not permissible in the secondary market. You can’t use them as collateral for loans from financial institutions, including banks, non-banking financial institutions, etc.
The debate between RBI bonds vs. fixed deposits has been going on for a long time. If you compare returns, RBI bonds offer better returns than FDs. However, they have a longer lock-in period of seven years compared to FDs with limited premature withdrawal options.
Floating-rate bonds are fixed-income instruments in which an individual or a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) can invest. The interest is paid half yearly on January 1 and July 1. Floating-rate bonds have no option to pay interest on a cumulative basis.
RBI bond interest rate as of now is 8.05%. Interest offered on bonds depends on the National Savings Certificate (NSC) and is 35 basis points more than what NSC offers.
